Paul McCartney Plays Unexpected Beatles Songs On World Tour Opener
Brazilian audiences got a treat on the opening night of Paul McCartney’s “Out There!” world tour when the living legend played a handful of Beatles songs that until now had never been performed live.
The veteran British singer played “Your Mother Should Know”, “Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite”, “Lovely Rita” and “All Together Now” for the first time during the Saturday night show at the 55,000 capcity Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizone -- a city he’d never played before.
McCartney opened his set with "Eight Days A Week," a song he hasn't dusted off since the Beatles played it for the one and only time back in 1965. He also gave a rare work-out to "We Can Work It Out", which hasn't been included in his set since his 2004 show at Glastonbury festival in the U.K.
McCartney dug deep into his songbook. He performed his solo track “Another Day” for the first time since 1993, and gave an airing to Wings works “Listen To What The Man Said” and “Hi, Hi, Hi,” neither of which had been played before at a Paul McCartney solo show.
His setlist also included Fab Four standards “Hey Jude,” “Yesterday” and “Let It Be.”
The singer's tour kicked off in Belo Horizonte thanks to a Facebook campaign which thousands of local fans got behind. At the end of the performance, McCartney brought on stage the girls who had led the petition. One of the girls, Cecilia Cury (21), flaunted her Beatles tattoo -- and had the bass player autograph it in on stage.
The U.S. leg of McCartney’s tour starts May 18 at Orlando’ Amway Center. A string of European dates begin June 22 at the Warsaw National Stadium in Poland, before returning to North America for another trek beginning July 7 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Canada.
McCartney’s tour rolled into Goiânia, Brazil on Tuesday and hits Fortaleza on Thurday – both cities he’d never before visited on tour.
