Kim Deal Quits The Pixies
Kim Deal is a Pixie no more. The beloved and infinitely influential alt-rock band announced Friday that their bassist of 25 years has "decided to leave."
In a statement signed by Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering, the remaining members wished her the best and left the door open for rejoining the group. "Her place will always be here for her," they said.
No reason was given for the split, though in recent years Deal has been concentrating more on The Breeders, the band she formed after the Pixies first broke up in the early 1990s. The "Last Splash"-era lineup of the band, which includes Deal's twin sister, Kelley, is currently on tour through August.
The Pixies last toured in 2011 and haven't released new original music since 2004's "Bam Thwok," a download-only single written and sung by Deal that was intended to appear on the "Shrek 2" soundtrack.
The band formed in Boston in 1986 and released debut album, "Surfer Rosa," two years later on 4AD. They went on to release the classic "Doolittle," "Bossanova" and their final studio effort, "Trompe le Monde," in 1991 before breaking up 1993. In 2004 Francis, Santiago, Lovering and Deal reunited for a tour, later releasing a string of limited edition live albums.

We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.
